Our square bottle
From the onset, we were drawn to square bottles without any specific reason, we just liked the way they looked and felt. So, we decided to go for it.
What began as an intuitive design choice soon became a signature element of our brand, and we take great pride in saying that the square bottles are our creation.
However, as we progressed, we quickly realized that the decision wasn’t as straightforward as we initially thought.
Square bottles have their own set of advantages and drawbacks, both from a practical standpoint as well as from a commercial one.
Space efficiency
Square bottles offer significant space efficiency, allowing them to fit tightly together with minimal gaps, unlike round bottles that leave wasted space. This results in better packing density, meaning more bottles per pallet. With more bottles on each pallet, fewer trucks are needed for transportation, reducing transport/shipping/warehouse (logistics) costs.
Environmental benefits
The improved space efficiency also has an environmental advantage. By reducing the logistics cost, square bottles cause a lower carbon emissions and reduce the overall carbon footprint by up to 20%. This makes square bottles a cost-effective, eco-friendly and sustainable choice.
Branding
Square bottles offer a distinct visual identity, making them stand out on crowded shelves filled with round bottles. Their bold, angular design immediately grabs consumer attention, helping to create noticeability and stronger brand recognition.
Because square bottles are less common, they are signified with premium or craft spirits because their unique sophisticated design and craftsmanship.
Unlike standard round bottles, square bottles convey exclusivity and attention to detail, making them ideal to emphasize quality.
None of the above matters if you don’t have a premium product that actually sells.
Potential downsides of square bottles
While square bottles have their advantages, there are a few practical drawbacks to consider:
Heavier bottle: Square bottles are generally heavier due to thicker glass walls needed to protect the edges from impact.
Harder to pour: Liquids tend to accumulate in the corners during pouring, making square bottles harder to empty completely
Labeling challenges: The flat surfaces of square bottles make labeling more complex and harder to automate, often requiring manual labeling in craft distilleries such as Red Anchor.
